Chronic Heart Disease

Basic Information
Heart disease is a category of the numerous types of heart conditions. Some prevalent diseases include Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), and Aortic Diseases. Heart disease, if left untreated can lead to numerous, life-threatening problems including atherosclerosis (built up plaque inside the artery walls; blocking blood flow and leading to heart attacks and strokes), heart failure, arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm. Despite its gravity, many underestimate the significance of maintaining a healthy heart: heart or cardiovascular disease takes the lives of 17.9 million people each year globally. Fortunately, up to 90% of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented with education and changes in daily lifestyle.

Risk Factors
Risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, diabetes, smoking (including secondhand smoking exposure), and an unhealthy diet. Unfortunately, modern sedentary lifestyles have greatly increased the prominence of such risk factors, which is why it is so vital to remain careful. These diseases can also stem from congenial heart defects, infections, age-related changes, high blood pressure, or sudden injuries. Nearly half (47%) of possess at least one of three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, or smoking.
